The notion of the module (from the Latin "modulus" for a small unit of measurement) in general suggests a part that is either physically taken out of context or abstractly detached from a whole. The modular designates something that is comprised of clearly differentiated individual parts which can usually either be removed or added on without disrupting the quality of wholeness.
Elementary Functions
The waistline is without a doubt returning to its rightful height. But after a long period – at least in terms of the history of fashion – characterized by a continual downward trend, the waistline cannot suddenly return to its former heights. We have become too accustomed to this experience the waistline to be able to imagine it elsewhere.
Object Module
Playing with changing the position of the waistline and the modular aspect of clothing are today more important than ever. On the threshold between the 20th and 21st century, the demands made by urban culture on clothing, namely to be both compact and expressive, have led to the situation that the waistline has become one of the principle scenes of events for the development of fashion.
The lower waistline cannot easily escape being involved in these events. Like other social phenomena which mark our times, it can be considered to be a democratic achievement of our society.
Over the course of the triumphant development of this trend, everyone has had the right to decide as they chose if or when they will take part. But the new paradigm is there and everybody is more or less aware of this fact.
Filler Module
First the close-fitting top was replaced by the trapezoidal silhouette, combined with tight jeans and a low waistline and clothing from the 1950s, then an entire season without pants and then finally stretch pants with a high waistline and "hobble skirts".
Perpetual Module of the Highest Degree
Life in a world of infinite possibilities also offers the possibility of non-realization. There are many different ways of following certain trends. In some circles in our society today, it is enough to have a basic knowledge of various topics. In other circles it is about becoming one with certain trends and innovations. Whereas a third position is to try to halt various trends, trying to develop some kind of antibodies against them.
Especially because the waistline has been lowered so much over the course of the past decade, more than ever in the history of European fashion, returning to its "normal" height will take a long time. This developing trend is looking for new ways to conceive of clothing.
